Women in Nature
The tidal process of layering that happens twice daily on the mudflats was the inspiration for the process and imagery of the Women in Nature series.
The San Francisco Bay shoreline became my Walden Pond as I worked there almost daily. I collected the seasonal colors for my palette and developed a menu of nature-based textures as I honed the “resist and pour” technique to portray women who have helped support and preserve the Hayward shoreline.
Using many layers of poured, stenciled, and dripped paint under and over wax and other resists, I explored and created at the meeting of decision and chance.
It was also this series that I exhibited with my daughter, Frances Li. Her gouache and ink images express the subtle parallels between female forms and their correspondence to nature, exploring color and form in women and nature and the connection between the two.
